Greene County Residents Form Proeducation Group
to
Promote Excellence in Education
A group of proeducation residents interested in supporting quality
education in the Greene County school system recently formed an
organization called Greene Residents for Excellence in Education
Now (GREEN). The first proeducation group established in Greene
County, GREEN has already begun working on creating an organized
voice of residents who hope to have an impact on decisions made
regarding the quality of the county's schools. As a result of an
organizational meeting held in May, GREEN has developed a mission
statement and goals, is seeking to establish a nonprofit foundation
to assist the schools, and is in the process of developing a website
(www.green4education.org) where residents can obtain timely information
on the county's school system.
"We believe it is time that those residents who are interested
in the quality of education in Greene County had an organized voice
in the decisions being made for our schools," said GREEN organizer
Pauline Hovey.
"We also need to communicate more with one another, with our
school board, and with our Board of Supervisors to have a better
understanding and awareness of what is happening in the schools,"
she added. "We want to help our schools in whatever ways we
can, by establishing this nonprofit foundation, by assisting through
volunteer opportunities within the schools, by helping to raise
the needed funding (both county and private) for our schools, and
by helping to ensure that our schools provide an excellent education
for all the county's children. Our mission statement says it all:
We believe it is absolutely essential to support excellence in education
for the county's children, now and in the future."
GREEN will work with the PTA/PTOs of the county's five schools and
plans to meet and work with local organizations such as the Charlottesville
Area School Business Alliance (CASBA) to accomplish its goals. Anyone
who supports these goals is welcome to sign up to join GREEN. No
amount of time is required. All that is needed is an interest in
supporting quality education.
GREEN will hold its next meeting at William Monroe Middle School
on Thursday, June 24, at 7 p.m. The public is invited. For more
information, come to the meeting or contact Pauline Hovey at phovey@green4education.org..
